But what would happen if your vehicle suddenly disappeared? More than 1 million drivers fall victim to this costly crime each year.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"article--copy topic--section-heading\">\n<h1>Reducing Motor Vehicle Theft<\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"reducing-motor-vehicle-theft\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"29781\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"article--copy\">\n<div id=\"29766\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"editor-text\">In 2023, more than 1 million vehicles were stolen in the United States\u2014a 25% increase in vehicle theft totals over the previous few years.\u00a0Vehicle theft is a multi-billion-dollar crime, costing vehicle owners more than $8 billion each year. Summers prove to be the worst season for vehicle theft. Visit the Vehicle Theft Rates Search.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col-sm-6\"><a class=\"btn btn-transparent btn-huge\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nhtsa.gov\/road-safety\/vehicle-theft-prevention\/theft-rates\">VEHICLE THEFT RATES SEARCH<\/a><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article--copy\">\n<div id=\"29776\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"editor-text\">\n<strong>A motor vehicle was\u00a0stolen every 31 seconds in the United States in 2023.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"editor-text\">Use common sense when parking and exiting your vehicle:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Take your vehicle&#8217;s key; do not leave it in or on your vehicle.<\/li>\n<li>Close and lock all windows and doors when you park.<\/li>\n<li>Park in well-lit areas\u00a0if possible.<\/li>\n<li>Never leave valuables in your vehicle, especially if they can be seen from outside the vehicle.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"editor-text\"><strong>Thieves want vehicle parts and valuable items, too.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"editor-text\">Radios and wheel covers aren&#8217;t the only popular stolen vehicle parts thieves take. They want whatever sells, from the mandated labeled parts to those that aren&#8217;t. Some of the most popular vehicle parts or valuable items stolen from vehicles include doors, engines, transmissions, air bags, radios, GPS units, cell phones, iPads, laptops, and purses.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section id=\"the-topic-protect-your-ride\" class=\"article--copy-container\" aria-label=\"Topic section container 29886\">\n<div class=\"container-fluid\">\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"article--copy topic--section-heading\">THE TOPIC<\/p>\n<h1>Protect Your Ride<\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"protect-your-ride\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"29886\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"article--copy\">\n<div id=\"29881\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"editor-text\">There are numerous antitheft systems and devices designed to make vehicles more difficult to steal or easier to trace and recover. Here are how some of them work:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Audible and Visible Devices: These devices, such as a horn alarm, deter theft by bringing attention to an unauthorized attempt to steal or enter a vehicle. Visible devices create a visual threat\/warning\/deterrence, such as the use of steering-wheel locks, as well as theft-deterrent decals, flashing lights, and window etching.<\/li>\n<li>Immobilizing-Type Devices: These prevent thieves from bypassing a vehicle\u2019s ignition system and hot-wiring the vehicle. Some incorporate computer chips in ignition keys or disable the flow of electricity or fuel to the engine.<\/li>\n<li>Vehicle Recovery Systems: These devices use electronic transmission technology that help\u00a0law enforcement reveal the location of stolen vehicles\u2014and possibly catch the thief in the act.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<section id=\"the-topic-wheres-my-ride?\" class=\"article--copy-container\" aria-label=\"Topic section container 29896\">\n<div class=\"container-fluid\">\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"article--copy topic--section-heading\">THE TOPIC<\/p>\n<h1>Where&#8217;s My Ride?<\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"wheres-my-ride?\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"29896\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"article--copy\">\n<div id=\"29891\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"editor-text\">If you are a victim of vehicle theft, follow these steps:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Contact police immediately to file a stolen-vehicle report. You will need a copy of the police report and\/or a case number to provide to your insurance company. You may also be asked to provide the following information:\n<ul>\n<li>License plate number;<\/li>\n<li>Make, model, and color of your vehicle; and<\/li>\n<li>Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and any identifying characteristics.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Contact your insurance company to file a claim within 24 hours of your vehicle being stolen.<\/li>\n<li>If you find your vehicle before authorities do, contact the police and your insurance company immediately.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"nhtsa-in-action\" class=\"component--full-width \">\n<section id=\"nhtsa-in-action-nhtsa-in-action\" class=\"article--copy-container\" aria-label=\"Topic section container 29811\">\n<div class=\"container-fluid\">\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"article--copy topic--section-heading\">NHTSA IN ACTION<\/p>\n<h1>NHTSA is dedicated to promoting safe behaviors on our nation\u2019s roads<\/h1>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"nhtsa-in-action\"><\/div>\n<div id=\"29811\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"article--copy\">\n<div id=\"29806\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"editor-text\">NHTSA regulations require vehicle manufacturers to label major vehicle component and replacement parts so authorities can better attempt to trace and recover stolen parts, and also encourages manufacturers to install passive anti-theft devices, like immobilizer systems,\u00a0as standard equipment on their vehicles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"editor-text\">As part of NHTSA\u2019s vehicle theft prevention outreach, we work to inform vehicle owners about precautionary measures they can take to help reduce and deter the theft of their motor vehicles. By providing\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.trafficsafetymarketing.gov\/get-materials\/vehicle-safety\/vehicle-theft-prevention?_ga=2.114439489.795936454.1515417234-425908831.1513465455\">fact sheets, infographics, and other relevant information<\/a>, we help educate consumers about the prominence of vehicle theft, identify high-theft areas by state, and give useful information about what to do and who to contact in the event a vehicle theft occurs. NHTSA also provides theft-rate data for continued consumer education and awareness about this problem.
